The Alamo, also known as the San Antonio, Texas of the new world, is the oldest mission in Texas, originally called the Mision San Antonio de Valero and later simply called the Alamo. The name was given because of the Battle of the Alamo, a popular story in Mexican history that is told about the destruction of the Alamo by the Texas Independence forces. The Alamo is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as it is one of the few Texas mission structures that remain standing from the expansion of the Spanish mission into Texas. Many buildings date back to the expansion of the mission. Several buildings can be viewed on the grounds as well as historical relics. One of the most popular tours of the Alamo is the Alamo dinner, which is held monthly during the week of May. This four-hour banquet is also featured on the cover of San Antonio, TX magazines, and a portion of these proceeds benefit the mission of the same name. The Alamo’s rich history as well as the cuisine served at the restaurant help make this a favorite downtown San Antonio dining spot. Many tourists come to the Alamo to enjoy a romantic night on the town while enjoying Texas music and dancing. The Alamo has been featured in many films including the film Texas Rising, the remake of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and the animated television series The Suite Life of Will Smith.
